Guest Blogger Barb Quinn Talks Beauty & How to Prevent Hair Breakage!

How to Prevent Hair Breakage

Keeping your hair in tip-top shape can be a major pain especially if you live in a dry climate. The biggest problem with damaged hair is that it often comes with split ends that break off, making it nearly impossible to gain length. If you have color treated or chemically processed hair it can be even more difficult to keep hair healthy. Fortunately, there are several things you can do to prevent hair breakage.

Protein Packs
Applying protein packs to your hair will strengthen your hair and help repair split ends. Some conditioners contain protein but sometimes your hair needs that added boost of nutrients to get back to a healthy texture. You can pick up protein packs at your local beauty supply store but higher end brands will typically work better. One of my personal favorite brands is ISO Beauty. Their BD Deep Treatment Mask w/Argan Oil for Damaged Hair is great for rebuilding your hair.

Deep Conditioner
Although protein packs strengthen the hair, some of them also tend to make hair more brittle and dry. If you aren't using a moisturizing reconstructor make sure you always follow up with a deep conditioner. In fact, it is a good idea to deep condition your hair at least once a week whether you have been using a reconstructor or not just for good measure. Every time I use it my hair is instantly smoother, softer, and more manageable. It's a little pricey, but it's definitely worth the investment.

Get a Haircut!
You may have heard that getting trims makes your hair grow faster which is a total myth. However, by getting damaged, split ends trimmed off regularly you will prevent breakage, which in turn, will help you achieve length more quickly. Find a stylist you trust and make sure they understand that you don't want more than a half inch trimmed off if you're trying to grow your hair out. If you just can't stand to get monthly trims, use slim scissors to trim any damaged strands you see.

Beat the Heat
Avoid overusing heat styling tools and make sure you aren't washing your hair every single day. When you wash your hair every day you strip it of the natural essential nutrients you need so try to go at least every other day without washing it. Also, skip heat styling tools if you don't need them and let your hair air-dry anytime you can. If you blow-dry your hair, take your time. A good blowout can last several days.

As someone with colored hair, I know how difficult it can seem to keep your hair healthy, but following these easy steps has helped me achieve super-long, colored hair with a smooth, healthy texture. Even if your hair isn't in great condition and you are suffering from breakage you can repair it and revitalize it with a little extra love and care.
